Rosemary Clooney: time doesn’t go by…

    Posted on Nov 29, 2007

First time I heard Hugh ‘Peanuts’ Whalum was a year ago, autumn 2006. I already shared with you what I felt when I first heard him sing: ‘I’ll Close My Eyes’ (When I heard Hugh “Peanuts” Whalum, I closed my eyes…), and I mentioned several other (mostly jazz) singers I use to listen to. Among them are Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Dinah Shore, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole… But I’m also listening to more recent artists such as Luther Vandross, Michael Bolton, Harry Connick, Jr, Diana Krall, Robin McKelle, Norah Jones and Dianne Reeves (Dianne Reeves: Good vibes, and Good work). So beside being all renowned jazz singers/musicians, what do they have in common? Some of them have made covers of the same songs, which is frequent in jazz music. But it always takes me by surprise when I hear the first… READ MORE

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Pretty, pretty, pretty good!

    Posted on Nov 25, 2007

The tagline for Curb Your Enthusiasm is: ‘Deep inside you know you’re him’, and let’s face it, we all carry part of Larry David with us. And I know a bunch of people who will definitely recognize bits of themselves in him (and no, I will not give names). I loved Seinfeld, then when Curb aired in 2000, I was thrilled to see Larry David’s so uncommon sens of humor was back. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld pitched Seinfeld as a “show about nothing” and the truth is Curb chronicles the apparently banal world of Larry David. His wife Cheryl, his friend Jeff… Here is an excerpt from the ‘About this show’ page on HBO website: ‘… this series proves how seemingly trivial details of one’s day-to-day life–a trip to the movies, a phone call, a visit from some trick-or-treaters–can precipitate a “Murphy’s Law” chain of misfortune to hilarious effect…‘…. Creative process on travel: a Notebook, a pen and a phone

    Posted on Nov 21, 2007

I am often asked where do I get my inspiration from, and I like to answer: “Everything is -already- in my notebooks!“. I’m not that old but my generation didn’t grow up with computers, so when I was young I had to write on paper everything I wanted to remember. The huge anchor near the swimming pool, the atelier of the leather watchstraps maker, the smell of oil paintings in the basement… Then came the sketches, the drawings. I put down any ideas that came out because I knew ideas linger for a moment, then in one second, they are gone. I sadly lost many of them, but I keep writing and drawing in notebooks. When I travel, I always have a notebook in one pocket (a Moleskine), my Nintendo DS or PSP in the other one, and my Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot K800i 3G phone (a 3.2-megapixel camera with auto-focus… READ MORE

From Scarface to Smokin’ Aces: the art of the gun scene

    Posted on Nov 13, 2007

I like gun scenes in movies, but very few directors have mastered the art of the gun scene. I was young but Tony’s death scene in Scarface (1983) was both shocking and exciting (read more about my Scarface experience here). Tony knew he was going to die but he goes out shooting and shouting insults like if he was immortal. That was my first gun scene experience in movies, an unforgettable one that inspired my first short movie as you may already know. But if Scarface is a masterpiece, other movies were also successful due to the quality of their gun scene(s). I’m not talking about classic western films, but about recent -action- movies, in the last two decades. John Woo is one of the best in the genre: The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992) both show slow motion shots and choreographed action in an amazing final scene (respectively a… READ MORE

Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 video game party tonight!

    Posted on Nov 10, 2007

I enjoy playing video games but I didn’t have a lot of spare time to sit down and start a game recently. So I decided to take action and put back on track the video game parties. While some people are going out eating and dancing in noisy and hip crowded places on Saturday night, I will be at home with friends, playing video games, and nothing nor anyone is going to change that. So tonight, I will put my hands on Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare PC (Activision/Infinity Ward) and Halo 3 Xbox360 (Microsoft/Bungie Software). Two games I was expecting for a long time and two of the most anticipated video games of the last two months. Both are First-Person Shooters, they are offering online gameplay and are, as of today, the best games of their genre (FPS). We’re moving our PCs and consoles right now for… READ MORE
