ICHEP 2010: high energy physics, neutrinos and dark matter in Paris

    Posted on Jul 26, 2010

I am interested in high energy physics, neutrinos and dark matter. I am no physician but I always had a keen interest for the universe, what it is made of, how/when/from what did it start and ultimately, what is the meaning of our tiny, insignificant life amidst this universe with no limits (and countless dimensions according to the M-Theory). The 35th ICHEP Conference started last week at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, and the introduction of the event says: ‘It will be the first ICHEP conference where physics results obtained at the LHC will be presented! New results about the elusive Higgs boson, or signals of physics beyond the standard model might therefore be announced at this conference! Major discoveries in other domains such as gravitational waves, neutrino telescopes, neutrino oscillations, dark matter or in the flavour sector are also possible, just to name a few.’ If all this… READ MORE

Grandmaster Flash, Seen, Jordans… Remembering the good old days!

    Posted on Jul 15, 2010

It was the end of the 1980s and everything was going to change for me. We used to meet in the lobby of the building, the smooth floor was perfect for teenage boys (and some adventurous girls) to glide and moonwalk. They were also slipping and tripping, a boombox was jamming out hip hop music before we decide to go ‘look for a wall’. At this time, everything was new to me (music, fashion, dance, graffiti) but it was hard to find these novelties. Living in France, things were a little different than in the US: if you wanted a pair of Jordans, you could hardly find them here but we had a plan: the father of a boy from school was a pilot (Paris/New York/Paris flights) and once a week he brought back a pair or two of Jordans to his son. Which shoes were immediately sold to one… READ MORE

Conflict minerals: the bloody Pandora’s Box…

    Posted on Jul 2, 2010

I usually don’t wear jewelry. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but they are definitely not mine. So when I heard about blood diamonds years ago, it didn’t come as a big disillusion. In 2007 I posted about Hotel Rwanda, Syriana, Blood Diamond… Not only entertainment. These films are informative movies the general public needs, and even if they have not been major box-office hits, they engage their audience and have an emotional impact on viewers. At least for a while. I know women who re-considered purchasing diamonds after they saw Edward Zwick’s ‘Blood Diamond’; it didn’t last long though, until Leo Di Caprio’s charm faded away. But at least, people who have seen the movie can’t ignore blood diamonds anymore. Unfortunately and despite international laws, the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council, we are not finished with blood diamonds: according to Human Right Watch, ‘In late June… READ MORE
