Grandmaster Flash, Seen, Jordans… Remembering the good old days! Posted on Jul 15, 2010 It was the end of the 1980s and everything was going to change for me. We used to meet in the lobby of the building, the smooth floor was perfect for teenage boys (and some adventurous girls) to glide and moonwalk. They were also slipping and tripping, a boombox was jamming out hip hop music before we decide to go ‘look for a wall’. At this time, everything was new to me (music, fashion, dance, graffiti) but it was hard to find these novelties. Living in France, things were a little different than in the US: if you wanted a pair of Jordans, you could hardly find them here but we had a plan: the father of a boy from school was a pilot (Paris/New York/Paris flights) and once a week he brought back a pair or two of Jordans to his son. Which shoes were immediately sold to one… Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) : gone with the babes… Posted on Jul 17, 2007 In may, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) at the Los Angeles Convention Center used to be the annual rendezvous for the video games industry with console makers, publishers, developers, journalists and gamers joining the event. Each year had its announcements and for at least 3 days, video games news from E3 coverage were almost everywhere on the Internet, on newspaper, on television… E3 became so big (60 000 attendees, 400 exhibitors) that I wondered if it could get any bigger. Electronic Software Association (ESA) president Doug Lowenstein was very proud of the 2006 edition and qualified E3 as “the most important gathering of interactive entertainment industry professionals on the planet“. And he was right. But it couldn’t get bigger and then ESA decided to give E3 a new format: no more music, no more giant screens, no more booth babes (one of the favorite and memorable attraction on the show… Game & Watch: 60 grams of happiness Posted on Jun 1, 2007 From Ball in 1980 to Mario the Juggler in 1991, the Game & Watch series was made by Nintendo and created by Gunpei Yokoi (RIP). These handheld electronic games had first two buttons, they used a LED display and had a clock and an alarm; everything could slip into your pocket. Amazing, huh? Well, not that much for today’s criteria on gameplay and fun in video games but for those who played them during the 80′s, they were a must-have. I remember when the Widescreen series came out with a wider screen and -some- colors, I played Parachute a lot (see the flying Shibi below this article, you’ll get the point). Then the Multiscreen series and the great Donkey Kong Jr… At primary school, we created a trade market for Game & Watch games. Few schoolboys/girls could afford to get the latest ones and the others had to watch them… |
