Sunday Roundup: Abyei, WOZA, Rwanda, DSK, Cannes Posted on May 22, 2011 Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. The UN General Assembly expressed ‘its deep concern about the continuing loss of the world’s biological diversity, and reaffirmed the commitment to the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and the appropriate transfer of relevant technologies, taking into account all rights over those resources and technologies, and by appropriate funding.’ It’s always baffling when stating the obvious seems, unfortunately, necessary… Not a good day for the environment but neither it is for #Sudan: Northern Sudanese troops appeared to have seized the contested town of Abyei on Saturday night, a UN spokeswoman said, increasing fears of conflict as the country’s south prepares to become the world’s newest country. We can read on this article: ‘Southern Sudanese army… Sunday Roundup: Free Revok, Chernobyl, ATA-SETI… Posted on May 1, 2011 For once (kind of) I will start with some graffiti news. This may not be the biggest news of the week for most of you but it is for any #Graffiti art fan. ‘Revok, one of Los Angeles’ best known graffiti writers, was arrested as he prepared to board a plane to Ireland at Los Angeles International Airport, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.’ The article on the Los Angeles Times explains: ‘Authorities claim Revok is a member of the graffiti crew Mad Society Kings, or MSK. Officials from the sheriff’s department were notified that there was an outstanding warrant against Revok for failure to repay victims of previous vandalism incidents‘… As soon as #da-eYe heard about the news, he decided to support one of his favorite graffiti artist. You can see on his website the work he did titled ‘Free Revok‘ to support #Revok. I think it is… Sunday Roundup: Graffiti, Congo, Sudan, J. Stiglitz, J. Silva Posted on Apr 10, 2011 Sunday Roundup. Everything is said, the title of this post is quite self-explanatory. I have been inspired by the Sama Gazette and their weekly Rendezvous Friday Digest. I think this is an interesting way to share with you the news that caught my attention and which are worth mentioning on this blog. This is my first #Sunday Roundup, I hope you will appreciate it! ART #Graffiti is Art. No question about it. Cool Hunting posted an article about Martha Cooper’s exhibition at L.A.’s Carmichael Gallery: “Martha Cooper: Remix” (9 April 2011 – 7 May 2011). “A major part of the early graffiti scene, photojournalist Martha Cooper is now on the other end of lens as the focus of a new exhibition at L.A.’s Carmichael Gallery. “Martha Cooper: Remix” sees over 50 artists recreate their favorite images by the ever-present documentarian, including works by Lady Pink, Faust, Neck Face, Fumakaka… Conflict minerals: the bloody Pandora’s Box… Posted on Jul 2, 2010 I usually don’t wear jewelry. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but they are definitely not mine. So when I heard about blood diamonds years ago, it didn’t come as a big disillusion. In 2007 I posted about Hotel Rwanda, Syriana, Blood Diamond… Not only entertainment. These films are informative movies the general public needs, and even if they have not been major box-office hits, they engage their audience and have an emotional impact on viewers. At least for a while. I know women who re-considered purchasing diamonds after they saw Edward Zwick’s ‘Blood Diamond’; it didn’t last long though, until Leo Di Caprio’s charm faded away. But at least, people who have seen the movie can’t ignore blood diamonds anymore. Unfortunately and despite international laws, the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council, we are not finished with blood diamonds: according to Human Right Watch, ‘In late June… Owen Maseko, a Zimbabwean artist under arrest Posted on Mar 28, 2010 Last week, artist Owen Maseko was arrested. I read the news on This is Zimbabwe site and since I appreciate Maseko’s work and respect his commitment, it was impossible for me not mentioning this arrest. From This is Zimbabwe site: Owen Maseko the world famous Zimbabwean artist has been arrested. His crime? He dared to be bold. Maseko opened his exhibition last night at the Bulawayo National Art Gallery, an artist’s impression of the harsh reality of Gukurahundi as well as the decades of oppression and violence that have characterised Zimbabwe. In a combination of graffiti, 3D installations and his painting Maseko unflinchingly dared to tell the truth, adding his usual and whimsical element of humour. Visit his website here. Voti Thebe, the person in charge of the Bulawayo National Arts Gallery, was also arrested. Stand up for the freedom of expression in Zimbabwe and help free Maseko. He is… |
