The Way-C touchpad by Congolese inventor Verone Mankou Posted on May 17, 2012 Semhar Araia is Founder and Executive Director of the Diaspora African Women’s Network (DAWN) and she recently tweeted: ‘By 2050,Africa’s population will reach 2 billion. By 2040, its workforce is expected to reach 1.1billion. Whos pushing govts to create jobs?‘. That’s a very good question and hopefully, there are already many talented and creative entrepreneurs in Africa, just like Congolese inventor Verone Mankou. Last year I read several articles about him and I thought it was perfectly illustrating how many countries in Africa are undergoing a profound transformation. In this article on Kumatoo.com we can read: ‘Verone Mankou, a young Congolese inventor aged 25, is the designer of a touchpad called “Way-C” for which the entire design and architecture have been conceived in Congo-Brazzaville.’ On a side note to some people I know who still don’t know the difference: do not confuse the Republic of the Congo, commonly referred to as Congo-Brazzaville, with the Democratic Republic… Sunday Roundup: Abyei, Ai Weiwei, Artmaking… Posted on Jun 5, 2011 U.N. probes absences amid Sudan clashes. Since Northern Sudanese forces seized Abyei, many rightfully think northern and southern fighting over Abyei could reignite a full blown war in #Sudan. And we thought U.N. peacekeepers in Sudan would protect the people of Abyei from the attacks; apparently we were wrong. According to Reuters: ‘U.N. peacekeepers in Sudan stayed holed up in their barracks for two days during violent clashes between northern and southern forces that sparked the flight of tens of thousands of civilians, diplomats told Reuters‘. We can also read: ‘Diplomats described the peacekeepers’ failure to maintain a visible presence in Abyei during a period of heightened conflict — which they said is crucial for deterring attacks — in disparaging terms. One senior diplomat described their performance as “pathetic.” Another said it was “terrible” [...] “The Americans and Europeans don’t want to send their troops into the field, and yet… Today is Pi Day. Or maybe we should call it ‘Half Tau Day’ Posted on Mar 14, 2011 | Ω 10 Comments Today is ‘Pi Day’, because it is March 14. You know, 3/14. Here is the definition: π (written ‘pi’ the Latin name of the Greek letter π) is a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any Euclidean plane circle’s circumference to its diameter. Maybe you are wondering why pi has its own ‘day’. Wikipedia provides some interesting information: ‘Larry Shaw created Pi Day in 1989. The holiday was celebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations‘. Now you know how it started. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts and geeks around the world on March 14th. But everything is not perfect in the ‘world of pi’… This morning I read an article on CNN by Elizabeth Landau: ‘On Pi Day,… Apple’s iPod Touch ‘Samazed’ and CES 2008 goodies Posted on Jan 11, 2008 This is my first (late?) post of 2008! I finally got a few minutes to present you my first ‘gadget’ of the year: iPhone Touch. First I wanted an iPhone like almost everyone, but since I can’t take photos with it (this is the reason why I bought my Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot K800i 3G phone, because it had a good camera), it couldn’t replace my actual phone so I decided to wait for the next iPhone generation. Until now, I used my phone to listen to music, sometimes also my Zen (Creative Labs) and/or my PSP. But the iPod Touch had it all (minus the camera, of course): the wonderful multitouch interface is exactly like on the iPhone, the 3.5-inch multitouch widescreen has a resolution of 480-by-320, there is a Wi-Fi version of the iTunes Music Store(so I can buy songs by just clicking on them) and you can use… The Big Bang Theory: Am I really that kind of Nerd? Posted on Oct 12, 2007 The Big Bang Theory pilot has been available for months on Youtube and it premiered on September 24, 2007 on CBS. About the show (from CBS website) : ‘Meet two brainiacs with a lot to learn. Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) can tell their quarks from their quantum physics, but have no clue how women add up. Leave it to their pretty new neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco), just off a messy breakup, to teach them a thing or two’. It may not sound very funny at first, but it is, definitely. The show (created and executive produced by Chuck Lorre – creator of Two and a Half Men – and Bill Prady) is getting terrific reviews all over and it deserves them, I was laughing constantly. The Big Bang Theory is about “nerd humor” and some people I know who watched the pilot didn’t really get what was… |
