Leon Botha: when Art is beyond what you see

    Posted on Jun 21, 2010

Updated: Leon Botha died from complications of progeria on 5 June 2011. My post about it here. South Africa: enough about football (BLK JKS, Amadou & Mariam and Angélique Kidjo live from Soweto) let’s talk about Art. A few days ago, as I was starting to write my new blog post about the 1980s, I visited the website of South African group Die Antwoord and I really like their music, a mix of conceptual rap-rave mutant hip-hop style. I especially appreciated “Enter Ninja” and then I watched the video on Youtube. An image immediately caught my attention: it was Leon Botha. I recognized him right away. Two or three years ago, my friend from South Africa told me about the first exhibition of South African artist Leon Botha, ‘one of the world’s oldest survivors of progeria’. But what I remember the most was his paintings of famous hip hop groups… READ MORE

The power of carrot and stick: reductio ad absurdum?

    Posted on Jun 13, 2010

I have expressed my humble opinion about Sudan, Burma, Congo and other issues on many occasions on this blog, looking at the root causes and trying to explain them with simple words. I have close friends working in local organizations in France but also abroad, and it is always rewarding to discuss with experienced people. For the “60 Signers for the 60th Anniversary” Initiative I launched on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I had the opportunity to meet with the presidents of Amnesty International France, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, UNESCO, UNHCR… Each time it was enriching and I had a glimpse at the other side of the coin, where the decisions are made. Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland (1990-1997), former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and member of The Elders, also signed the artwork I created and… READ MORE

BLK JKS, Amadou & Mariam and Angélique Kidjo live from Soweto

    Posted on Jun 2, 2010

I think everyone knows that by now: FIFA World Cup will start on Friday, June 11 2010 and end on Sunday, July 11 2010. Even if I am not a big football fan, I will watch some matches. But World Cup 2010 is not only about football: the world’s biggest superstars will come together live on VEVO on June 10 from Soweto/Johannesburg, South Africa for the FIFA World Cup kick–off celebration concert. You read well. And the list of performers is impressing: Alicia Keys, Amadou & Mariam, Angélique Kidjo, Black Eyed Peas, BLK JKS, John Legend, Juanes, Shakira, The Parlotones, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré and Vusi Mahlasela. I will watch this concert with great interest since many singers and musicians I appreciate a lot will perform live. First BLK JKS. I wrote about them on September 2008: Music of Africa: BLK JKS, from South Africa and I will be happy… READ MORE
